As I approach the final semester of my undergraduate career as an advertising student at Texas State University, I can finally say goodbye to pulling all-nighters finishing essays, meeting up for group projects and study sessions at the library. It’s time to say goodbye to my little college town of San Marcos and hello to the real world. With a degree hot off the press, a little agency experience and a killer resume – it’s time to land a big-girl job in the ATX.
Am I totally freaked out? Absolutely.
But my time here at Marketing Matters has really helped me in my transition into the advertising world. Here are some things I’ve noticed during my time as an account service intern at Marketing Matters.
Working at an advertising agency is definitely a more relaxed environment, but nonetheless professional – and that’s why I love the advertising industry. Many members of the MM team often brought in their dogs. It’s not unusual around here to see a French Bulldog napping by the front desk. Coming into the office, everyone is always very welcoming – including the pets!
Your work days will be different – but that’s an ad agency. Be ready to roll with the punches and take pride in every assignment you do. Some days will be slow – others will be jammed pack with work. Some client projects are more interesting than tedious tasks. No matter how big or small the project is, rock it. Don’t stress out. It’s all about prioritizing your work load.
Workamajig is an internal project management software tool made to make your life simpler. However, it can be frustrating at times. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
Unlike other agencies, the MM team is a small, tight-knit group of people who maintain a work-life balance. From birthdays to baby showers – the MM team knows how to throw an office party! Being surrounded by supportive, fun people in the workplace is one-in-a-million.
Believe it or not – answering the office phone was a struggle the first week of my internship. But, after some practice (and mess ups) I can now take down new business calls like a champ. If you’re reading this, no prank calls please.
My time at Marketing Matters has really given me a taste of what it’s like working at an Austin advertising agency. Aside from all the fun we’ve had at the office – I’ve learned so much from the account service team. From campaign management to social media and client services – I’ve gained a lot of knowledge of the ad biz that will help me in my future endeavors – and more specifically my job search after college. Working at an ad agency has really strengthened my professional skills and provided me with a great foundation to start my career in advertising. I am grateful to have met so many awesome, creative people and gain some experience along the way.
