Four Things I Wish I Knew Four Years Ago

Posted by Victoria Zapata on May 1, 2014

Cue “If I could Turn Back Time” by Cher.

Fresh faced and 18, I thought I knew everything and was ready to embark on my adventure that would be moving to the capital of Texas and attending UT. As my senior year comes to an end, I still don’t know it all but here’s what I wish I did four years ago.

  • Year 1: Don’t know what you want to major in? Neither does anyone else. The majority of college students, over 50%, change their major at least once. On the first few days of class (aka Syllabus week), the professor would ask everyone’s major, and I’d slink back in my seat hoping no one would notice I didn’t answer. That’s OK. It wasn’t until my second semester of Freshman year, during my History and Development of Advertising course that I knew I had found it. I would be an advertising major.
  • Year 2: You’re going to make mistakes. Nobody is perfect, but everyone is human. Did you forget to set your alarm for class the Monday after Spring Break? Things happen. You can’t control other people’s mishaps but you can decrease yours. I’m a list maker, I like to write everything down and have stacks of post-it notes to remind myself of what needs to get done. I also have a planner so I can forecast what’s to come and schedule my time. These are little lessons you pick up on that will help you for the rest of your life. Also, don’t be too hard on yourself.
  • Year 3: Internships Matter. Everyone tells you they look great on your resume, but internships also give you a glimpse into the field that you’re studying and insight to your future career. Not all internships are created equal. If you happen to have a bad experience once, don’t write it off. Every agency, company, and office is different. They have their own flair and culture. If you know that you want to go full speed ahead in your major, then give it another shot. They won’t be handed to you though. It takes research, initiative and a bit of courage. But, if you find an internship that is everything you hoped it would be, your decision in your major is solidified.
  • Year 4: It goes by way too fast so take advantage! Seriously. It really does. There’s no advice to give because the end of college is inevitable. I just took my cap and gown pictures. And it hit me, I’m graduating! What?? And it’s scary. But it’s exciting! So take advantage of your experiences and the resources made available to you as a student because those four years (or sometimes five), go by in a flash.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about all my lasts, like my last Communication Council meeting and turning in my last college paper (which I was way more excited about). But commencement doesn’t just mean a graduation ceremony; it also means a new beginning or start. So as I cross that stage on May 16th and move my tassel from right to left, I will take my life lessons with me and embark on a new journey aka entering the ‘real world.’
